I’m in a Wheel Chair, is it easy for me to get around?

The truthful answer to this question will depend on where in Puerto Del Carmen you are stopping.

Matagorda is the flattest part of Puerto Del Carmen and thus the easiest for anyone in a wheel chair to get around.

The Strip (new town) can be difficult, there is a lot of work happening at the moment to try and make places of business easier access for someone in a wheel chair. Some parts have already added ramps in, such as Centro Alantico but there is still a lot of places that don’t have this kind of access.

The Old Town does not have a great deal of ramps in business. Again this is changing with new laws coming into force that will make business have some form of ramp so that people in a wheel chair can access the premises.

On a whole, Puerto Del Carmen is not over friendly to wheel chair users, some of the curbs can be more than a foot tall making it impossible for people to access these. With the Island also being build on mountains/volcaneos there is a lot of steep hills.

Note: A lot of this is being imporved everyday with roads being and pavements being fixed.

Is it safe to take my Children out at night?

Yes. Most bars in Puerto Del Carmen will cater for small children. There is a very large police presents on the Island. The reason for this, is Lanzarote is a Police Training ground. The police train in Lanzarote, once finished they are normally sent to another Island or back to main land Spain.

Webmaster Note: In the few years I’ve spent living on this Island you soon come to release that there is little crime. Like everywhere in the world you will get some, as long as you are sensible and take care at night you should be fine.

How much Cigarettes and Alcohol can I take back?

Tobacco allowance is 200 Cigarettes OR 250grms of Tobacco OR 50 Cigars.
Alcohol Allowance is 1 Litre of Spirits OR 2 Litres of Sparkling or fortified wine PLUS 2 litres of still wine.

How much does it cost for a Sun Bed and parasol on the beach?

When you go down to the beach you can hire 2 sun beds and a parasol for around 8 euros.

Note: These prices can/may change so be sure to take extra money with you – also remember to be safe with your money on the beach!

Is it safe to buy Electrical Goods?

There is one place in Puerto Del Carmen where it is suggested you are to buy electrical goods, this place is called Visanta

The shop is located just past the casino, keep a look out for a bar called The Barge Inn pub and a mountain bike rental shop.

How hard is it to get a job?

Within Puerto Del Carmen they are many job available. One of the best ways to get bar work is to simply go in to the bars and clubs in Puerto Del Carmen and ask.

Normally they will take your number and will contact you when/if a job comes up.

The best way for a job is word of mouth at the moment. As some people have lived on the Island for a long time you will soon find that they know of jobs and will be able to pass on information about this.

Can I use my mobile phone in Lanzarote?

When in Lanzarote you will want to use your own mobile to keep in contact with poeple. You are able to use your mobile if your network/mobile is setup to be used in a different country. We would suggest that you contact your Network provider and ask them before you travel to Lanzarote.

What kind of prices should I expect to pay for drinks and a meal out?

When you are out and about in Puerto Del Carmen you will find the prices for food and drink will vary throughout the resort.

For drink you should expect to pay the following prices (these are not a deffinate amount, more of a general guide).

Soft Drinks – between 1-2 euros

Large Beer – between 1.50 to 5 euros

Alco Pop – between 3 – 5 euros

Spirit and Mixer – between 3 – 6 euros

Cocktails – Between 4.5 – 8 euros

For a meal out this can again be either cheap or expensive. I would always recommend shopping about rather than just picking the first place you come across. You can get a main meal at night for as little as 5 euros along the main Strip in Puerto Del Carmen.

Some of the best and cheapest places to eat in Puerto Del Carmen are normally local Spanish restaurants. Don’t be shy to try them out.

The size of Lanzarote Island is:

60 km from north to south

25 km from west to east.

Lanzarote has 213 km of coastline, of which 10 km are sand, 16.5 km are beach, and the remainder are rocky.

What colour are the beaches in Lanzarote?

Although the Island of Lanzarote is a volcanic one, the main beaches are golden. There are some which are mainly rocks/black beaches but just about all tourist beaches are golden sand.

A long time ago the sand was imported from other countries in order to give tourist the golden beaches they wanted, in time though, all these beaches are being replenished by winds carrying sand (Sand Storm / Calima) from the near by deserts.
